My Faves for Thursday, February 28, 2008

Following on from the StORe project, a JISC press release announces that UKDA-store will be launched on 30 June 2008 at the NCRM Methods Festival in Oxford. UKDA-store uses repository software to aid researchers to deposit data with the UK Data Archive and to self-archive their data. Astrid Wissenburg, Director of Communication and Information at the ESRC is quoted as saying that "The ESRC welcomes the creation of UKDA-store as a valuable tool for the archiving of social science data, and is complementary to the ESRC's publications repository."

My Faves for Monday, February 18, 2008

This article describes the work currently underway at Monash University to rethink the role of repositories in supporting data management. It first describes the context within which the work has taken place and some of the local factors that have contributed to the inception and continuation of this work. It then introduces the idea of a Data Curation Continuum and describes the various continua that might be applicable in a repository data management context. The article then discusses some of the implications of this approach, before reviewing related work.

DRIVER, or the Digital Repositories Infrastructure Vision for European Research, is a joint collaboration between ten European partners which aims to create a knowledge base for European research. DRIVER is funded by the EU (FP6) and puts in place a test-bed of digital repositories across
Europe, to assist with the development of a knowledge infrastructure for the European Research Area. The project builds upon existing institutional repositories and national networks, from countries including the Netherlands,
Germany, France, Belgium and the UK.

DDI and Institutional Repositories briefing paper

DDI, the Data Documentation Initiative, is the "codebook standard" for quantitative social datasets. This new briefing paper from the DataShare project explains the DDI as a form of metadata, how version 3 embraces a life-cycle approach to data management, and how the DDI could be exploited by OAI-compliant data repositories.

DDI and Institutional Repositories, by Luis Martinez, released 1 February, 2008.
